The Texas summer heat continues to soar, but the state's electric grid has proven remarkably resilient. In a recent month, Texas hit generation records, including its highest load ever (91,308 megawatts) and maximum battery discharge (13,256 megawatts). Yet, remarkably, the grid has remained stable, avoiding the need for conservation appeals that were common just a few years ago. This transformation is largely due to the increasing role of batteries in stabilizing the grid.
The state's grid operator, ERCOT, has not issued a single conservation appeal this summer, a stark contrast to 2023 when six were issued. This shift is attributed to the grid's ability to handle peak demand without resorting to price hikes. Joshua Rhodes, a research scientist at the University of Texas, notes, 'We're really seeing peak demand divorced from peak prices.' This means that even during the hottest days, real-time prices remain relatively stable, and natural gas and solar power continue to dominate the grid.

This stability is further enhanced by the grid's ability to charge batteries during peak demand and discharge them in the evening when solar power is less available. As a result, the grid can better manage the transition from solar to wind power.
For instance, on a recent Monday, when solar power was at 1.5% of the grid's mix, batteries discharged 11,573 megawatts, and real-time prices were around $125 per megawatt-hour. This is a significant improvement from the same time in 2023, when prices soared to $5,000 per megawatt-hour. The increased battery capacity has made the grid more stable and less exciting for operators, as prices remain lower.
Texas' geography also plays a role in its grid stability. The state's extensive solar projects in the west are well-positioned to serve the high demand in the eastern Texas Triangle. This geographical advantage allows solar panels to operate for an extra hour or so, contributing to the grid's reliability.
However, the success of Texas' solar and grid battery industries has led to a unique challenge. Battery operators are no longer receiving high prices during peak demand, as the grid can handle the load with the help of batteries. This has created a situation where battery operators are 'eating their own lunch,' as prices remain lower. In contrast, California's battery storage sector originated with a state mandate, which has helped to jumpstart the industry.
Despite these challenges, Texas remains at the forefront of battery additions in the country. Kevin Lee, head of advisory services at Aurora Energy Research, acknowledges the cyclical nature of the energy business in Texas, where supply and demand are never perfectly balanced. However, he also notes that price signals drive more investment, ensuring that the market remains dynamic and responsive to changing conditions.
